Plant-Based Meat With an Asian Twist is Coming to the US

UNLIMEAT, a Korean leading meat substitute brand is entering the US market by selling its products online. The move is the first step in the company's 2022 globalization strategy. It will be followed by collaborations with restaurants on menu items, and then the launch in brick-and-mortar stores. The US launch was announced by a billboard on the Thomson Reuters building in New York's Times Square.

UNLIMEAT launched its flagship product in 2019 with 'UNLIMEAT Slices' and a wide variety of plant-based associated products, including minced meat product that can be used like ground beef, a burger patty, and pulled barbecue meat that resembles slow roasted pork.

UNLIMEAT produces plant-based meat alternatives with a robust beef-like flavor and texture from unwanted produce (soy and pea protein, coconut oil, cacao powder, and rice flour), using a proprietary “protein compression” extrusion technology.

Other than the US, UNLIMEAT is expanding to restaurants and entering retail channels in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

According to Euromonitor International, the global meat substitute market was worth $4.94 billion in 2020 and is estimated to reach $6.04 b in 2023. Given the current trends emphasizing value-consciousness and ethical consumption, it is likely that the market share of alternative meats will reach 60% of the total meat market by 2040. The US is a mature market with a well-developed vegetarian culture, accounting for 21% of the global demand for meat substitutes – about $1 billion in value.

Thanks to Squid Game and BTS, Korean pop culture has become universally known, leading to growing interest in Korean food. There are many players in the US meat alternative scene, including Impossible, Beyond, Quorn, and Morningstar Farms. However, none of these brands offer products suited to Asian cuisine. UNLIMEAT's newly launched Slices and Pulled Barbecue were designed from with Asian cooking in mind, particularly Korean dishes such as bulgogi and stir-fried meat with Gochujang.

UNLIMEAT products are currently available at Wooltari, an online commerce store selling Korean food items with logistic bases in Los Angeles, San Jose, and Irvine. It additionally has distribution centers in seven other US and Canadian locations, including Seattle and Toronto. Its 'lightning delivery service' guarantees delivery within 48 hours anywhere in the continental United States.
