Synergy Flavours and Carbery Showcase Trending Functional and Nutrition Concepts at Vitafoods 2025

Discover Synergy Flavours and Carbery at Vitafoods Europe 2025, 20-22 May, Barcelona, stand 5H46

Synergy Flavours, global leader in flavourings and taste modulation, is presenting a range of concepts at this year’s Vitafoods alongside its parent company Carbery, to inspire new product innovation in functional foods. Synergy’s diverse flavour portfolio and expertise is showcased using ingredients from both Carbery, and other functional ingredients suppliers, in concepts including smoothie boosters, healthy ageing, and weight loss treatment support solutions. These concepts aim to tap into the latest market trends while conferring sought-after flavour and widespread consumer appeal.

With multiple functionalities in a healthy beverage a high priority for many, Synergy’s ready-to-mix (RTM) Protein Red Superfruit smoothie blend features a hydrolysed whey protein concentrate (WPC) from Carbery for a high protein boost and a red superfruit powder blend, which includes a range of red fruits and vegetables. Presented as a strawberry and raspberry flavour, this product concept provides 10g of protein to support health claims. The RTM format of this product also offers a more convenient solution for consumers compared to traditional blended smoothies.

Healthy ageing is also high on the nutritional agenda, as the number of people aged 65-79 in the UK alone is predicted to increase by nearly a third to more than 10 million by 2065. With consumers increasingly seeking supplements to support their long-term health, Synergy is presenting a concept protein shake application, using creatine and Optipep whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) from Carbery to support muscle mass maintenance, demonstrated in chocolate Bueno flavour.

The ongoing obesity crisis and rising popularity of weight loss drugs such as GLP-1 has led to innovation in the food and beverage sector to counter their potential side effects, including dehydration, change in taste perception, and lower protein intake caused by reduced appetite. Dietary supplementation can help maintain protein intake and altered taste preferences create new opportunities for taste modulation in product development, such as electrolyte-rich, protein-enhanced drink mixes with natural flavours. To support new product development in line with growing demand, Synergy will be presenting two concepts: a cucumber, lime, and mint flavoured hypotonic beverage, which contains a blend of electrolytes to support hydration and offers fast absorption into the bloodstream, and a peach flavoured protein beverage, which contains Carbery hydrolysed whey protein in combination with a Synergy taste masking solution and a range of vitamins and minerals, to support muscle maintenance for consumers in a calorie deficit.

Chris Whiting, Business Development Manager for Nutrition at Synergy Flavours, comments: “Continued strong consumer demand for functional products creates opportunities for creativity and innovation. Taste modulation remains a crucial aspect of product design, as incorporating an increasing number of functional ingredients can introduce undesirable flavour notes. This is where flavour expertise is required to balance and enhance taste, and we’re excited to present new flavour concepts targeting growth sectors at Vitafoods this year.”

Carbery will also be showcasing its portfolio of whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein ingredients at Vitafoods through a range high-quality concepts, including protein bars, a refreshing hydration drink, and a high-protein smoothie, to demonstrate the versatility and functionality of its Isolac and Optipep ingredients. Carbery’s expert team will be available on the booth to discuss how whey proteins can enhance formulations and support taste, texture, and nutritional benefits in applications including sports, infant, and clinical nutrition.
