Planteneers Expands Portfolio of Plant-Based Seafood With Calamari and Shrimp
Plant-based seafood comes in as many forms as plant-based meat: tuna, salmon, scallops and crabs. But also calamari and shrimp.
In the spring of 2021, Planteneers added calamari and shrimp to the list. The right word, however, should be 'invented', Dr. Dorotea Pein, Planteneers Director of Product Management confirms: “The category didn’t exist before that. The enormous technological leap we made in the development of fish alternatives was a real breakthrough."
The success was immediate. According to Dr. Pein, the interest in plant-based fish and seafood that attendees of Plant Based World in New York last December showed, confirms the importance of these products.
What makes them special is that it's possible to produce them without investing heavily in new equipment. Both use the same system, with just a few adjustments to change form and colour. Production is very straightforward too. The mass is first made in a standard cutter, then a standard moulding machine gives it the desired shape.
Just like regular calamari and shrimp, they can be used for cold foods like salads and antipasti or for hot dishes, deep-fried, pan-fried or grilled. They can be prepared breaded or not, and are also suitable for being deep-frozen.
These new product concepts will expand the existing Planteneers' plant-based portfolio, which includes breaded fish sticks, canned tuna, salmon- and tuna-style sushi, raw tuna and salmon, smoked salmon, surimi, and salmon fillet.
Planteneers' products are intended for manufacturers in the meat industry, fish producers in the convenience category, and companies specialising in making plant-based alternatives.
