MeaTech to Scale Production of Cultured Fat With New Pilot Plant in Belgium

MeaTech 3D announced that its Belgian subsidiary, Peace of Meat, will build a 2,000 m2 pilot plant in Belgium. Construction is expected to start in 2022.

The new facility will expand and accelerate MeaTech's cultured avian technology and R&D capabilities and help propel the company's market entry.

In September 2021, Peace of Meat revealed that it managed to cultivate just over 700 grams of pure chicken fat biomass in a single production run. This breakthrough was an important step toward the ability to manufacture cultivated chicken fat at an industrial scale and develop novel hybrid meat substitutes.

“Peace of Meat's new pilot facility will expedite our entry into the market for plant-based meat alternatives and cultured products. We believe that cultured animal fat can infuse alternative meat products with the signature flavors, aromas and textures of conventionally farmed meat, delivering an enhanced consumer experience,” said Arik Kaufman, MeaTech's Chief Executive Officer.

MeaTech operates facilities in Rehovot, Israel and Antwerp, Belgium, and is in the process of expanding activities to California, USA. By adopting a modular factory design, MeaTech is able to offer a sustainable solution for producing a variety of beef, chicken and pork products, both as raw materials and whole cuts. With this type of approach, it will also be able to provide meat manufacturers and retail businesses with production equipment.
