Optiprot is a Mexican startup that produces and processes mealworms, the first edible insect approved for human consumption in Europe. 

For organic farmers, Optiprot produces mealworm frass - called Optiabono, which helps plant development, increases yield and humidity retention in soil, is effective against fungi and plague, and is free of chemicals and heavy metals. 

Optiprot’s food product is called Okuilli, ground mealworm that can be used as a high-protein sport supplement, meal replacement, or as a supplement for the elderly who need to fight muscle loss. Okuilli has a delicate nutty flavour and works as an ingredient for biscuits, pasta, milkshakes, burgers, and even fruit.

The startup also produces fresh and dehydrated mealworms for petfood, reptiles and birds.
