How Many Insect Species Qualify for Mass Production?
There are more than 1900 insect species currently edible worldwide (van Huis et al., 2013; Shockley and Dossey, 2014). However, only a handful qualify to farm on a large scale.
Entolab encourages you to review a list highlighting some of the most common insects grown to produce food and feed. Companies like Entolab are working on improving their scale and production to reach a more market quota of feed and food production worldwide.
Each species involves a lengthy scientific study which the authorities must legally approve of in each country or region to allow use in animal feed or even human food. Therefore, not many species are approved for both, although there are many indications that this will change in the very near future.
