Functional Food Ingredients - a NewProtein Special Focus
Consumers are increasingly interested in foods that offer specific health benefits, creating a market for functional foods enriched with ingredients like prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and other nutraceuticals.
With the gut microbiome playing a critical role in human health, influencing digestion, immunity, and even mental well-being, there exists an opportunity for food manufacturers to develop products with targeted health benefits by incorporating food ingredients that impact the microbiome.
Nutraceutical ingredients offer a range of benefits. They can support immune health, e.g., vitamins, minerals, and botanical extracts; promote heart health, examples being omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and plant sterols; aid cognitive function; think B vitamins and antioxidants; and benefit joint health, e.g., glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate.
In this NewProtein special focus, we'll examine the differences between prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics and some nutraceutical ingredients you may wish to consider for your next product development project.
Prebiotics
These are non-digestible fibers that nourish beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria ferment prebiotics, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that strengthen the gut barrier, boost immunity, and enhance digestion.
