Fooditive Develops First Vegan Casein Using Precision Fermentation

Dutch plant-based ingredients manufacturer Fooditive Group aims to change the opinion toward GMO foods. After the great success of its upcycled natural sweetener, the company is now expanding to the development of a casein powder without the use of animals.

Casein is one of the main dairy proteins that give milk its unique texture, taste, and functionality. Fooditive’s goal is to fulfil the demand for milk in the coming years and eradicate the downsides of factory farming, lactose, hormones, and antibiotics. “Delivering ingredients that have been produced sustainably is key to a long-lasting future that can support the growing human population,” said Moayad Abushokhedim, founder and CEO of Fooditive. “We believe in making a healthy and affordable milk protein. To get there, we need to target every aspect of our diet, and animal-free products should definitely be a part of it.”

“We understand that the production of food-grade genetically modified organisms is subject to constant debate due to the combination of negative consumer perceptions and the distrust towards conglomerates. Our aim is to change that by showcasing an innovative approach,” said Product Manager Niki Karatza.

Fooditive believes its vegan casein will be a game-changer in the food industry. The key to producing this ingredient was first to understand milk’s formula and then to re-create an animal-free version of casein by using a scalable fermentation process.

Fooditive’s vegan casein will be the first one of its kind to be available for food applications: dairy milk formulations, yoghurt, crèmes, and cheeses. Its launch is planned for 2022. There is already an extensive list of food developers and food companies - some of them are big players in the dairy industry – willing to test the ingredient in their products.

“We have been delighted that pioneers and experts in the dairy industry are interested in our vegan casein. We are looking forward to seeing the results in all the different applications and work towards revolutionizing the food industry together”, said Abushokhedim.
